MFL

At Ingleton C of E Primary School we are guided by the National Curriculum for Languages.

The National Curriculum for Languages aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

Languages (MFL) Curriculum Statement

INTENT

At Ingleton Primary C of E school we believe in and engaging and creative curriculum that gives children opportunities that they may not have had access to in any other way. We hope to inspire our students to develop confidence through learning a new language and understand how fascinating the language and other cultures can be. Our language curriculum gives our students a foundation of knowledge and tools that will prepare them for further language studies in Key Stage 3.

IMPLEMENTATION

The curriculum is overseen by the subject leader and led by the class teacher. MFL is taught to Key Stage 2 pupils for one hour per week. In Lower Key Stage 2 (Y3/Y4) and in Upper Key Stage 2 (Y5 / Y6) pupils are currently taught French.

By the end of Key Stage 2 and through the use of songs, rhymes, stories, poems and games the children will be taught to:

  • Listen attentively to the spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding.
  • Explore the patterns and sounds of language and link spelling, sound and meaning of words.
  • Engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others; seek clarification and help.
  • Speak in sentences, using familiar vocabulary, phrases and basic language structures.
  • Develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases.
  • Read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing.
  • Broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material, including through using a dictionary.
  • Describe people, places, and things orally and in writing.

IMPACT

Our MFL curriculum is fun and enjoyed by learners, well-resourced and planned to demonstrate progression through Key Stage 2.
In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through:

  • Pupil discussions about their learning and repetitive use of common phrases.
  • Monitoring and reflection against subject-specific skills defined in each year of study.
