At Ingleton C of E Primary School we are guided by the National Curriculum for Science.

The National Curriculum for Science aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.

INTENT

At Ingleton C of E Primary School we want our children to be provided with a high-quality science education embedded with meaningful, memorable learning experiences. We feel it is essential to promote a love of science and prepare our children for life in an increasingly scientific and technological world today and in the future.

Our well sequenced curriculum enables our children to build on prior knowledge, to deepen understanding and embed previous learning into their long-term memory. We will increase pupil’s scientific knowledge and develop their working scientifically skills by providing a range of scientific enquiries, investigations and questions to help them explore the world around them. Specialist vocabulary for topics is taught and built upon, and effective questioning to communicate ideas is encouraged.

IMPLEMENTATION

  • A cycle of lessons for each unit, which carefully plans for progression and depth of knowledge and working scientifically skills.
  • Coverage and progress are accurately assessed as children move through the Science curriculum.
  • Science teaching is embedded with meaningful, memorable, practical learning experiences.
  • Differentiated lessons and recording strategies to ensure all pupil needs are met.
  • A unit overview which includes key objectives, self-assessment, teacher assessment and key vocabulary will be included at the beginning of each unit. Furthermore, in order to enhance vocabulary development KS2 pupils will complete a vocabulary grid prior to starting the unit, whilst KS1 pupils will discuss the new vocabulary.
  • Educational visits, visits from experts and extracurricular activities such as Science fayres that will enhance the learning experience and engage their scientific enquiry.
  • Appropriate curriculum themed home learning tasks which children complete with adults at home.

IMPACT

Our children will have:

  • A wider variety of skills linked to both scientific knowledge and understanding, and scientific enquiry/investigative skills.
  • A richer vocabulary which will enable to articulate their understanding of taught concepts.
  • Meaningful, memorable learning experiences.
  • An understanding of Science related industry and careers.
  • Where possible experience of meeting and working with scientists from universities and local industry.
