At Ingleton C of E Primary School we are guided by the National Curriculum for Music.

The National Curriculum for Music aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • perform, listen to, review and evaluate music across a range of historical periods, genres, styles and traditions, including the works of the great composers and musicians
  • learn to sing and to use their voices, to create and compose music on their own and with others, have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument, use technology
  • appropriately and have the opportunity to progress to the next level of musical excellence.

Music Curriculum Statement

INTENT

At Ingleton C of E Primary School we are committed to ensuring the effective delivery of a music curriculum that is accessible to all our children. We believe that music is a powerful communication tool that can impact our feelings and emotions. This gives children the opportunity to develop their own personal expression. Music lessons give children access to a wide range of musical styles, cultures and societies from all over the world as well as the one in their local area. Exposing children to music from an early stage helps with their development and understanding of musical skills and knowledge. All our music lessons allow children to learn the value of self-expression and develop skills, attitudes and attributes that can support other areas of their learning. This allows them to grow into confident learners, who gain a range of skills through music that can be streamed into other areas of their learning.

IMPLEMENTATION

The music curriculum is planned using the Durham Music Services programme Charanga. part of this planning process, teachers need to ensure that their music planning includes the following:

  • A knowledge organiser which outlines knowledge (including vocabulary) all children must master and apply in lessons.
  • Playing and performing in solos and ensembles to a range of music styles.
  • Improvising and composing a range of music styles.
  • Listening to music and accurately recalling what they have heard.
  • Understanding staff and musical notations.
  • Understanding a wide range of live and recorded music from a range of different genres and recognise great composers.
  • Developing an understanding of the history of music and composers.

IMPACT

Whilst at school the children access music every day in Collective Worship, once a week through music lessons and through extra-curricular music lessons provided by external tutors. We use a range of music in the school to engage the students and help them build on their skills such as: achievement, self-confidence, interaction with and awareness of others, and self-reflection.

Music allows children the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of culture and history, both in relation to students individually, as well as ethnicities from across the world. Children are able to engage in music and become enthusiastic learner in many ways. For example, they can find the pulse of the music and learn the different layers of the music, take them apart and build them back up again and they can develop their abilities to be the performer, creator or appraiser of music.
