PHSE
Intent
The intent of our PSHE curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all and that will maximise the outcomes for every child so that they know , remember and understand more. At Ingleton C of E Primary School, personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education enables our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members of a society. It aims to help them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. We provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.
Implementation
PSHE Education is a planned programme of learning through which children and young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to manage their lives – now and in the future. As part of a whole-school approach, PSHE Education develops the qualities and attributes pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. As part of the National Curriculum schools must also ensure that they promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society, and prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. They must also promote British values.
In our school we use the Jigsaw programme to teach PSHE Education.
What is Jigsaw, and how does it work?
Designed as a whole-school approach, Jigsaw aims to equip children for life, helping them really know and value who they are and how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.
Jigsaw has two aims for all children:
- To build their capacity for learning
- To equip them for life.
Jigsaw brings together PSHE Education, emotional literacy, mindfulness, social skills and spiritual development. A variety of teaching strategies are used and are mindful of each child’s preferred learning style. Jigsaw is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme (Puzzle) at the same time.
This enables each Puzzle to start with an introductory assembly, generating a whole school focus for adults and children alike. There is a Weekly Celebration that highlights a theme from that week’s lesson across the school, and encourages children to reflect that learning in their behaviour and attitudes.
